The New Local SEO: Your Listings Now Talk to AI

Business listings used to matter for maps. Now AI assistants read them too. A practical checklist for keeping your local listings clean, consistent and useful.

The short answer

Your business listings are one of the first places AI assistants look for basic facts about you. Keep your name, address, phone, hours and categories identical everywhere, pick precise categories, write a real description, add photos, and reply to reviews. Then check a few key directories in your field, because those lists are often cited directly.

For years, local SEO meant one thing: show up on the map when someone nearby searches. That still matters. But there is a second reader now. When a customer asks an AI assistant for a local business, the assistant often leans on the same listings to check basic facts.

Why listings matter more than before

A listing is short, structured and easy to read: name, address, phone, hours, category, a description, photos and reviews. That makes it a trusted source for the basics. If your hours are wrong on a listing, an AI answer may repeat the mistake. If your category is too broad, you may not come up for the questions you care about.

A practical listing checklist

  1. One name, everywhere. Use your real business name. Don't add keywords to it.
  2. Identical address and phone. Same format on your site and every listing, including suite numbers.
  3. Precise categories. "Pediatric dentist" says more than "dentist". Pick the main category carefully, then add the secondary ones that are true.
  4. A real description. Two or three sentences: what you do, for whom, and where. Write it for a person, not for a search box.
  5. Hours, including holidays. Update special hours before every holiday.
  6. Photos. Your storefront, your team, your work. Real photos help people trust what they read.
  7. Replies to reviews. Short, polite, specific. They show you are active, and they add context in your own words.

The directories in your field

Every industry has a few lists that carry weight: professional associations, booking platforms, and local "best of" pages. AI answers often cite these lists by name. Find the three or four that matter in your field and city, check whether you appear on them, and make sure your details there are correct.

Keep it current

Listings drift. A new phone number, a move, a changed service. Put a reminder in your calendar to review your main listings every quarter. It takes twenty minutes and saves you from months of wrong answers.

Questions and answers

Which listings matter most?

Start with the major map listing in your area, then the main directories and booking sites in your field. A good test: look at which sites AI answers cite when you ask about businesses like yours.

Should I put keywords in my business name?

No. Use your real name. Adding keywords can get a listing suspended and confuses anyone trying to match your listing to your website.
